My guess is the trans was mis-stamped "C", which is the M22("rock crusher") suffix code, they stamped over that with the "X" to "erase" it, then stamped the "A" suffix, which is the wide ratio M20,.
So, the trans is a wide ratio, 2.52 first gear, Muncie M20, built December 22, 1970, for the 1971 model year.
If your car is a '71, and was built after Dec. 22 '70, it's prolly the original.
Here's a little know "tip" on date coding Muncie and BW trannys...
The Year date, for example on this one, is stamped with a "1", but...the trans was built in 1970. What the heck is goin on? Glad ya axed...
The year date codes on these transmissions were stamped for the car model year it was intended for, NOT the year it was actually made/built. So, you can have a trans that appears to have been built AFTER the build date of your car, but it's really not. It's just a weird way they dated them.Just something to watch out for when shopping for a date-coded trans, or...to keep from getting took when buying one that is supposed to be original, or dated for your particular car.

Cool, thanks Joel. It "feels" much tighter that the M-21 in my '70 L-46, maybe I'll have to crack it open and take a look.
