Tranny bolts

Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!

Im learning a hard lession here.  If you are putting a together over a year after taking apart...mark all parts better!!!   I cant seem to find in any of my books what size the bolts are for putting the torque converter on the flywheel or the tranny to engine...  Help!!

The torque converter bolts are special  hardened  bolts, with different than standard heads.  Regular bolts may fail.  If you can't find the right ones in the piles o' parts, get some new ones.

The trans bell housing to engine bolts will be 3/8 course thread, and  a few inches long.

The T.C. bolts are almost 1/2" long, 3/8" coarse thread, and will look different than any other bolts for the car. The bellhousing bolts are about 2" long, 3/8" coarse thread, and normally will not have threads all the way up the bolt. They will look just like d##m near evey other bolt on the car!! They are similar to the bolts that are used for the intake mfd. Make SURE the bolts you use for the T.C. are not too long, as you can damage the converter if they are. They should bolt up on the T.C. without bottoming out without the flywheel. Screw the bolts in the T.C. first, before installing the trans to make sure. A tip for bolting the converter up: If you look at the holes in the flywheel, you'll see one hole that has flats on the sides, while two are completely round. Start the bolts in the hole with the flats first, and the other two will line up perfectly.

Thanks, I think I found the bolts but no nuts????  I took my old converter to shop for repair/exchange.  The one I got back seems to need to have a bolt and nut to hold to flywheel.  Ive seen the kits at summit, I'll just have to play with length.

my recommendation, not the cheap way of course.  Just buy new bolts.  Summit sells ARP, Moroso, Milodon, etc and they all have bell housing studs and converter and flex plate bolts.

Does you have a 350 or a 400 trans? If it's a 400, you got the wrong converter. The Chevy 350 is the only one to use bolts AND nuts. The B.O.P. 350 converters used just the bolts, and also the 400 for any make. The 350 converter will work in the 400, but you have to be sure you have both bolt patterns on the flywheel, because the 350 uses a smaller pattern than the 400. Most flywheels have both patterns, but not all. If you use the 350 type TC with the nuts & bolts, you really need to use lock-nuts, either the crimp style, or the 'nylock' style. The only problem with the 'nylock', tho, is they are usually too thick to fit in behind the pad of the TC.
