by the way.. the bols are not measured by head size.. they are measured by shaft thickness.
in general.. most of the sizes under 1" are usally 3/16' smaller than the wrench needed to turn the bolt.
so the 7/16 and 1/2 you referenced are actually 1/4 and 5/16

If you don't have the inch pound torque wrench here is another method.
Run all the bolts down to contact. Snug them up evenly, a little bit at a time. Watch the gasket on the side of the oil pan. When you see the gasket start to compress, stop turning. If you go too far, the gasket will split and leak. Too little, and the gasket will leak.
(some day, no strike that, October 2008 it turned red, still in progress!)
