Since replacing the stock radiator with an aluminum radiator my '79 runs at appx. 160 degrees. Pretty cool!

Because it runs this cool, can I afford to make it run a bit hotter by advancing the timing a little? (I've heard advanced timing results in a better throttle response.)
A) Good idea.
B) If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I thought advancing the timing made it run cooler, to a point.
I have my 72 LT-1 set at 17* using manifold vacuum.

I agree with the above.
Running cooler engine temp may allow you to have your timing advance come in a little quicker without the engine pinging/knocking. This will give you better low end performance. Your total mechanical(no vacuum) advance should be around 36 degrees BTDC, all in by 3000 rpm. Are you using premium gas?

I use 89 Octane fuel after discovering it made no real difference from the Super Unleaded 92 or 93 Octane.
I'm thinking of advancing it 2 or 3 degrees and see how it goes.
