Vette(s): 1970 T-Top350/350hp numbers matching 4 speed. It's a mess and 1970 Convertible 4 speed.
Hey I had a mechanic tell me I need to replace the third member differential on my 81. What is it and can I do it with my little knowledge of mechanics

As far as "What is it?", take a look at THIS.
As to whether or not you can do it, I'd say...probably.
The '81-'82 diffs are easier to remove than the earlier cars, imo. Kevin(KeBo) just went thru this on his '81. He did it the easy way, tho...he paid someone else to do it!!! Cost quite a bit more that way, but, sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.

(in all fairness to Kev...he's a busy guy. )

HERE'S one of Kevin's threads on the diff. situation he had. He did wind up having just about everything back there redone. I'm sure if you P/M him, he could give you an idea of the cost, and the troubles they encountered in the process. Adams' Apple2006-10-26 19:02:18

Hey I had the corvette mechanic look at it he said he could do it for 280.00.
That sounds like I could do it. I will look at the book and see.

That's purdy cheap, even for just labor to replace.
Ya sure there's not a worm on the end of that hook?

What's wrong with yours? Did he tell you?
