To rebuild or not rebuild.. What does one look for to determine if the steering box needs rebuilt?

Well since you have the car completely ripped apart. Are you doing a NCRS type of restoration? If you are it probably wouldn't hurt to have the steering box gone thru. If your not I would suggest ditching that box along with the steer cylinder and control valve and put a Borgeson box in it. It looks stock but it updates your steering and eliminates the steer cyl./control valve and hoses that are prone to leaking.

Cindy,
When you were driving it down the road. Can you remember how far you turned the wheel left to right to keep the car going straight down the road? Mine with only 50,000 miles is about 1.5" of play at the steering wheel.....stuff inside the steering box is loose to begin with. I was gonna send mine out to Gary Ramadei who is praised for his "blueprinted" rebuilds....but I have to pull it off the car sometime.
