steering box

 on my 69 coupe,,Manual steering, I checked the steering gear box and have NOOO,lubricant in the steering box,,,Does it need 90 weight gear oil or regular grease,, ,,I removed both bolts from the top of the gear box,, and inserted a probe,,,I found no lubricant,,,what do I need to put in it?  rd,,thanks

Rick, for manual steering the GM manual says to use GM #1051052 Steering Gear Lubricant (13 oz. containers) or any Steering Gear Lubricant which meets GM Specification GM 4673M, or its equivalent. I have used both... but on older boxes gm recommeds CVC Lubricant/Grease in the Steering Box instead of the Gear Oil.  Grease will also stop any minor leaks.  Good luck.

I just went through this with advice from Joel, took top completely off and cleaned out box, used a small amount of 90 weight to clean and work things around a bit and packed with clean grease. Put it back together and adjusted the lash. Drove it a little bit and it seem's a lot better. To get the lid completly off I had to screw adjusting screw in till it came off. hope this helps.

I can attest that 90 wt gear lube shouldn't be used.

Remember The steering gear box only needs to be 3/4 filled, it needs air room for movement and changes in engine temperature

Regular chassis grease is fine. I usually mix a wee bit of 90wt in so it will transfer a little easier, but too much, and they will leak.
They don't recommend EP(extreme pressure) grease because it's a little too thick for the purpose...
