Has anyone used this tool before? My 69 steer box looks original and I would like to keep it working. No signs of leaks and the unit looks in good shape. I do not want to remove any bolts from the cover plate if I do not have too. Should I just leave alone? Type of grease to use? chassis grease? wheel bearing? any suggestions are helpful.. Bob

Never used a specific tool other than a regular grease gun. You do have to remove the one specific bolt to squeeze the grease in. I have always used regular chassis grease, and have had no problems with it. Some like to mix 50/50 chassis grease and 90wt gear lube, but the gear lube has a tendency to leak more than plain grease.

Thanks for the information. I saw the zerk fitting bolt tool online and was just wondering if others have used them. I plan on using a regular grease gun and pump a small amount into the box .

I drilled out a bolt, threaded it for a small grease nipple so i didnt have to take the bolt out again to add grease. the nipple can be covered by a rubber brake nipple dust cover.

The grease has been in there since 1969. Probably like candel wax bout now. Pull it off and clean it up, rebuild it,put new grease in it and be MUCH better.

You are right, thats exactly what I did. I think it was around $80 for the rebuild kit and took a couple of hours to do the rebuild, also replaced the steering coupler it didnt look to good at the time and was easy to do.

The grease fitting thing is otay, but I have a problem with using something like that. It would be real easy to pop a seal, since you're basically pumping grease in with no vent of any kind to allow any air that is in the box to escape....unless you also remove one of the other bolts. Just an observation....

The directions tell you to remove two screws. screw the fitting into one and let the grease come out the other and then replace the two screws
