Hi
brian (redborderreivers) Newcastle upon tyne , UK

thanks for all your help in the past , here i go with another request,
I think  the steering box in my 79 L82 requires ajustment ,
I can turn  the steering wheel quite a bit before the wheels move,
whats the best way to adjust the backlash on these units (pitman is that correct?)

you guys are the experts, looked at the manual but that just gives adjustments with the steering box on the bench,
can i adjust on the car an whats the best way.

thanks in advance , Brian

First, make sure the rag joint isn't what is causing the play. The rag joint is the component that connects the steering column to the gear box, under the hood. It is made of three pieces: The metal flange for the steering column, a rubber/belted flexible coupling, and the metal flange that fits on the steering gearbox. The rubber flex coupler is ripped in a lot of cases when you have excessive play in the steering wheel. I would make sure that is in good condition before attempting to mess the the back/lash adjustment on the steering box. That adjustment is pretty sensitive, and if you get it too tight, you could wipe out the gearbox quickly.

If you find that your rag joint is good, we'll post up the adjustment procedure for ya.

Joel thanks ,
the rag joint /flexible joint is fine the play is in the box itself not anywhere else on the steering system- so yep if you have a procedure for adjustment that would be greatly apreciated
