Vette(s): Just purchased '79 L48. Red on Red with automatic transmission. In need of TLC and I hoping the experience and knowledge on this site can help me get this Vette in respectable shape piece by piece.
My engine won't turn over unless I give the starter a couple of good taps then it finally catches. Do I need a new starter or is something else causing the problem? I'm a newbie to the site and a newbie to the C3 Corvette ownership. I have a 79 L48 that needs some work but I'm looking forward to getting started. Thanks!

typically having to tap the starter to work on any car means it is worn or stripped on one side and tapping it moves it to a good part and yes needs to be replaced , don't wait too long, that only works for awhile |cheers|

Thank you. I was pretty sure that was it but I wanted to make sure. Thanks again for the quick response!

That starter definitely needs replaced or you can save some money by having it rebuilt. You won't be able to use the car for a few days, but I like having my own part rebuilt rather than buying a rebuilt unit from some assembly line rebuilder and who knows what kind of quality control.

Hi.
If I can make a suggestion. When you install that new starter make sure you have a heat shield to protect it..
Lack of a heat shield is one cause of starter failure in a C3.

Gunslinger-Can you recommend a mechanic or shop who does good rebuild work in the Frederick area? Thanks!

K & K Automotive on Route 355 in Frederick specializes in rebuilding starters, alternators and carburetors and a few other related items. They do outstanding work. I just had the Quadrajet on my '78 L82 rebuilt by them and they did a great job. Their carb guy knows his stuff. Last year they rebuilt the electric motors that power the rotating headlights in my '67 Dodge Charger for a very reasonable fee and they work great.

Their number is 301-663-5258 and their website is <www.knkauto.com>.

They will treat you right. I've been dealing with them for over twenty years and have yet to be unhappy with their work or pricing.

Vette(s): None-but would like to get one when i am old enough
you might want to get a new starter or rebuilt on (i prefer rebuilt because of orininality) or it could be the battery is discharged, shorted or open starter circuit or a defective solenoid switch. Check the things I listed befor getting the starter rebuilt to save money. I do agree that you will probably going to need a rebuilt starter though |headscratch|
