shifter pointer auto trans - 1981

my gear indicator pointer  is missing. is this a big pain to repair / replace? has anybody done it?

If you are referring to the plastic pointer on the center console shifter, then yes, very easy repair.  just need to take the couple of screws out holding the passenger carpeted tunnel cover and the shifter pointer is there.  If you don't like to work in tight places, then you can take both sides (driver and passenger) carpeted tunnel covers off and remove the 4 screws holding the center console in place and lift up for easier access.  

sounds good thanks.  im going to be replacing some window switches so while the console is up i guess i can get to it. i just wanted to make sure it wasnt one of those parts that they built the car around...
