Just a short note to add to all the great advice everyone has given, but I've seen no mention of this.
If you use heat on any bolts or nuts, make sure you replace them as the heating process will ruin any hardening treatment already applied to the bolts or nuts. Especially if you get them to the cherry red stage and especially head bolts. You don't want a head to come flying off after you get everything back together.

I just used the melted wax method on the Kids 1978 Oldsmobile Starfire to remove the ORIGINAL catalytic converter and it worked well... the bolts were plenty hot frm having just been driven.... melted the wax, let it sit overnight..... next day the impact gun made small work of the bolts..
