On my '76 with a holley 650 and RPM, the air cleaner just touches when closed. I would like to have another couple inches of clearance...

The RPM should put your carb about 5/8's" higher then stock. You might need to get a drop base aircleaner.

I had one on my 78 and the you could see the impression of the Moroso aircleaner in the hood blanket. The hood latched with no problems, but my fear was if I really jumped on it and the engine torqued over that it might hit against the hood. That really never happened.
If you get a low profile aircleaner, you should be OK.
