Good info.  And remember if you don't have a stock cam, you need to go with the cam mfg recommendations.  They have already taken the rockers into account.

When I got the 79,I found that one of the previous owners had installed a cam in my non-numbers matching 350.Dont know when or what 350 was added(I tried to track the number),or what cam & specs.I'm thinking of finding a dyno somewhere to check it out. Any suggestions here?

You could put a dial indicator on the rocker at the center of the oil hold above the push rod.  Then turn the engine over by hand and watch the indicator.  This will tell you what the lift is on the cam, and you can go from there.
