Rochester Q-Jet Rebuild

I having a problem with the float sticking in my Rochester carb causing fuel to spill out everytime the car sits overnite or longer. I need to get a rebuild kit to have on hand in case I damage the gasket when I open it up. Anyone have a source they would suggest to purchase the rebuild kit?

So far I've purchased everything from Zip Vettes in Richmond, VA. but most of that is because they can send stuff UPS ground(aka cheap) and still have it here the next day. It might be a good place to look. www.zip-corvette.com

Completely off topic, but yeah, that is one of the oddest views of the C3 i've ever seen, still kinda freaks me out a little, but its an unusual pose for a C3 Beauty, so I thought I'd make it my sig just so i'd stand out a little more than I already do =)

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

I believe you can get a carb kit at any NAPA store. If you don't have a napa, most good auto parts stores have rebuild kits...

I also have to admit this is one of my favorite views of a C3, totaly blew me away!
Speaking of the Q-Jet, I have a problem getting my 80 L-82 to start after sitting for a couple of days. It will start but not till I've cranked it over pumping the accelerator 20 times. Of course I've been told by my local GM dealer (whom I've taken all my old Chevy's to over the years.) that the carb needs replaced. I'm not willing to do this as I only have 65k miles on her without a bolt ever being turned on the engine. I asked about the accelerator pump being bad and inquired about a rebuild but they said it wont help. I think they want more of my money!

I rebuilt my carb and the float problem went away. I am not sure if your carb is the same but I remember years ago reading about the plugs on the bottom of the carb leaking after the car sat for some time. The suggestion was to add epoxy over these four areas to eliminate any leakage. When I went to rebuild mine last month, I found someone had already added the epoxy. Again, not sure if your carb has these same plugs.

Regarding the epoxy plugs, my mechanic said the same thing. That's why he recommended replacing mine altogether. You can only ' Bubba ' your carb so much before its time for a
new one... |laugh|

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.
Before changing my carburetor to an Edelbrock 650 I also had to pump the accelerator between 5-10 times before the beast would fire up. Now...once to the floor to open the choke and "Vvvrroooommmm, buubuubuubuubuu"...HEAVEN! Once again after she has had a chance to warm up, and I'm on the road. No gas fumes. No problems.

I suggest you change your carb as recommended. I realize you want to keep the car original but some parts just weren't meant to last forever, and you can always get an original replacement. |thumb|

The underside of the main fuel wells, All Rochester Q-jets have this potential problem and it needs to be addressed. It effects driveability and mileage. I've done this on every Q-jet and dueljet made by Rochester and Carter (yes, Carter makes a Q-jet.) It's very simple to do. if you want to rebuild your own carb then get the GM/Delco kit from the local dealer. Not all kits are created equal so I would just stay away from aftermarket if possible. Yeah, it’s a little more, but this is your corvette we’re talkin’ here. They may have to be special ordered but they should have it in a day or so.

Haynes publishes a very good carb manual for Rochester that goes into carb fundamentals and a step by step guide. I recommend this book for newbies and pros. Any auto store that carries Haynes books should have it for $12 or $13. It even mentions plugging up the factory main well plugs.
