Anyone know how to replace a tach drive gear in the distributor for '68? I think mine has been removed. Must have gone bad. But now not sure how a new one is intstalled. Do I have to remove the distributor?

I replaced the drive on my 72. You can do it without removing the dist. Unscrew the cable and use a big screw driver to take out the brass fitting (it's slotted) and you can pull out the gear. It is better to take out the dist. though, so you can check the teeth on the shaft. I had to replace both. Hope this helps. Tom

I'm actually rebuilding mine tonight. If the tach gear broke ( the third one I done also) I'm sure the shaft gears have some damage. On the one I rebuilding tonight- some of the metal bits fell down the shaft and boogered it up. SOOOO- you could just put in a gear @ $30 bucks- only to have it break soon after. Also look at going ahead a replacing the tach cable- it usually helps break the gears when it binds up from lack of lubrication.
Rebuilding the distributer is really easy.
