O
I stopped over at Manny, Moe, and Jack"s this morning and picked up some rear gear oil.
I'm getting ready to change the pinion shaft seal. The oil I picked up is :Castrol HYPOY C Gear Oil, Sae 80W-90.
One of the lines on the back say "Meets the service fill requirements of conventional and limited slip differentials". Do I still have to buy the additive ? I don't want to over do it.

I would add the posi additive too. Most of the gear lube these days have some kind of additive package that meets the requirement of late model stuff, but not necessarily for our classics. Better safe than sorry.

BY ALL MEANS use the additive. Suitable does not mean the additive is there. Just means it can be used WHEN the additive is used. AND when it is, it's usually not enough.

I just did the 30,000 MI differential lube change and used the same Castrol HYPOY C Gear Oil, Sae 80W-90 and was told at the parts depot to put in the diff additive, so... that's what I did.

The hardest part was getting the old stuff out without driving the car to warm up the rear. I used a little space heater and it worked fine.

The posi additive is an extreme pressure lube.
It prevents the differential gears from scoring, so if you have Positraction, you need the additive.
It won't hurt anything if you don't have posi.
