I just changed the oil and additive in the rear end on my '71 and refilled it to the proper level. Now I have a leak but not from the drain hole. It seems to be coming from where the leaf spring in attached to the rear end housing. Is there a gasket there or is there a vent tube somewhere that may be causing this leak? It didn't leak before but now it does. |headscratch|
Thanks |saluteflag|

Welcome to the forum |thumb| Are you tslking sabout where the bolts go through the spring bottom mounting plate into the spring? If so, did you torque those bolts at all? Sounds like you have a crack in the rearend. |sad|

Thanks for the welcome. Where I'm talking about is the bottom of the spring plate where it fastens into the rearend, I think this is right, according to a diagramed picture. I did not torque these bolts as I didn't touch them. Is there any vent tube on the rearend?
Thanks

Yes there is a vent "hole" and filler tube on the rears. On my 82 the filler hole is on the right side, and vent hole on the top. If you didn't replace anything back there, you might have a cracked case. |sad|

OK, then that would explain why there wasn't much oil that I took out when I changed it. I'll have to take a better look and see what's going on. Thanks

I drove the car today for about 20 miles and cleaned the rearend and surrounding area with kerosene. Hosed it off and so far no oil leak after 11 hours of sitting. Don't know what to think now. |headscratch|

Is it possible tht what you saw was just excess dripping down the rear from when you filled it up. That's what it sounds like to me.

Maybe that was where it was coming from but the area around the plug was clean. Anyway still no leak so I hope whatever happened continues to. Thanks for your input, appreciated!

Well them I would suspect the side yoke seals. Is that area clean? If it is leaking from there while you are driving, it will spray everywhere.
