As some of you know I have been real concerned about the noise in the rear of my 71 which sounds like wheel bearings. When I had the tranny out I replaced the drive shaft u-joints and the roar went away. Still concerned about bearings I took axle and calipers off and as far as my and a couple of other mechanics opinion the bearings are not an issue. They are spinning free, no noise and very little play. This is all good as fundage is low, and I know its a tough job. At least now I have peace of mind.

So, come on Effingham. I'm ready to rock!!!Thumbs Up

Nice to have some good luck with the car for a change. I just had the opposite with my car. THe rear wheels had play in them so I pulled it apart and also found the bearings in the rear were bad also. Replaced all bearings and seals in diff. and wheels inner & outer. The wheel bearings were not bad but the spindle nut had backed off a little. I had the new bearings so as long as it was apart I put in the new ones. Everythings nice & tight now. So I too am ready for Effingham! Can't wait to see everyone's smiling faces, even Butch's.

It's a good feeling when the bearings are still tight and no noise..I would suggest one thing if you haven't done it yet..grease the rear wheel bearings..I really bug on this because mine exploded on me..I found a grease tool that is easy to use..Mid America sells it..it does take a little time to get down to it but I think it is really worth it..it really was not fun getting a ride home on a flat bed..
Look foward to meeting people also at Effingham..

Hey Rich, does that tool have to have the back side apart or can I use it as my car sits now?

For the grease tool to work you have to unhook the drive shaft from the outer spindle yoke and remove the big nut from the spindle yoke..it slides in place of the yoke and the big nut goes back on hand tight..then pump with grease and spin the wheel..it's very easy to do..and since the inner bearing is the one that takes the abuse it's the one that this tool greases..my outer bearing on the side that exploded looked fine..I also have all the tools to do a full bearing replacement if need be..give me a buzz if you want to add this to the to do list!

Hey Terry....

Have you checked your tires for any problems??  Sometimes a belt is going bad and will make noise durring rotation.  I have had several bad tires thru out the years making sounds imitating bearing noises.  The tire may look OK but can be bad on the inside.

That's true indy..Hunter makes a tire machine that's called a Road Force balance..if you suspect a bad tire or just want the best balance you can get find a shop that has one of these..you won't be disappointed..

After I replaced the u-joints the sound went away. Just wanted to be sure about the bearings. The tires are new Dennis. The grease tool sounds like something I would like to do. I think I know someone I can borrow one from.
Thanks guy's. And BTW. Dennis did you ever clean out your pm box so I can send you a message. I'd like to get in touch. "T"
