anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the old rag joint from the coupler. or where I can find a new coupler

Removal is not that bad. Remove the bolts from both sides, and spread the joint over the shaft with a screwdriver or chisel. Then slide the ends off of the shafts. You may need to loosen the steering column and raise it an inch or two to get clearance, but sometimes you can get it off without moving the column.
New ones should be available from several sources. Wilcox, etc.
