On my 79 there is a tension pulley, hard mounted right below the AC. Not in my assembly manual? Can it be just removed and discarded? I do not have a air pump on my car also. I am getting ready to do some work on the car and may replace it if needed. That thing has to be going out, I don't know what type of bearing if any at all is in it. 79FOREVER 2008-06-27 07:35:09

If your A.I.R. pump is gone ya dont need the tensioner, yank that bad boy off and chuck it
.Alot of guys remove it and all the associated hardware, and plug off or change the exhaust manifolds, never know it was there. It depends on your state laws

I am sure my manifolds have been changed, they don't have the tube ports.

Do you have some type of aftermarket serpentine setup on your motor? I don't have any tension pulley on any of my Vettes, simply a guide for the belt under the compressor.

The federal boys from EPA are concerned for 25 years. After, not at, 25 years they don't care about emissions anymore. A few states do care. Check your own state laws.
