[QUOTE=art-corvette]took the wheels off , half-shaft , brake disc , calliper .. and put a dial measure on the spindle
the result :  on one side 0.0059 play and other side 0.0043

service manual say  play should be within 0.001 and 0.008 so actually i am within that limit.. but to my idea the that 0.0059 is still on the high end ..

geesh i hate this... when setting up..i measured it several times and play was  0.0027 and 0.0035

.0059 is within spec for sure..  while i had mine out i tried to get them within .003 and while it was a pain...  i should be possible and worth it.  (my shim set was spaced out by .003)

i have to say that 0.0059 feels kinda uncomfortable .. i just can feel the play when pushing and pulling on the wheel.. it just feels unhealthy cause i was alays used to not feel any play on my car wheels
but then again.. who am i to go against GM's service manual

I'm with Joel on this one.  If you've set up the trailing arm and wheel bearings ok, and it sounds like you have, the play you are feeling has to be in the diff yokes.

I set mine up some time ago and I can feel some slight play and a knock which I put down to the diff yokes.  You can feel them moving with a two person test as described above.  If it's not a huge movement I wouldn't worry about it.  The pic of your alignment looks fine.

well spindle play of .008 is VERY sloppy but in spec..  that why quality control on our C3's sucked..

i dont think the overall play you are describing system wide is not unusual...  but if you are in a position to easily re shim your rear wheel bearing to get the play down under .0059...  i would do it..

are there different kind of shimm sets around?

i have a a 0.145" shim on my bearing  which gives that play of about 0.0059  and the next shim in set is  0.139" .. wat gives me a play of 0"
looks like i need a shim of about 0.141" ( maybe i can settle with 0.140 or 0.142 .. dunno how exact my measure equipment is  :)

You can buy shims from different corvette suppliers. Some of the sizes are .097, .103, .109, .115, .121, .127, .133, .139, .145. I think Mid-America and Van Steel carry them. I had access to a surface grinder and ground down mine to the required clearance.

If you have a Corvette shop in the area, they usually have every shim available for the spindle bearings. Sometimes the dealer will have an assortment, also.
I have always been able to "borrow" an assortment, and use what I need, and tell them which sizes I used. Then they will charge me for the shim(s) accordingly.
Just an idea.

Vette(s): 1977 L-82 originally white/buckskin interior. Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!

I have the bearing set-up tool if you need it.

Ben used it, and actually "tweaked" it to make it work better.

No charge to use it, just normal postal service for shipping.

If anyone needs it, let me know.

Alan

my problem was that i needed a shim in between these two sizes :.139, .145.   but i have ben able to solve it. advise from someone at a corvette garage was to take that  " tube" (that is on the spindle together with the shim )  and put sandpaper on a glass plate and and move the tube over it .

now i have been able to bring te play back from  0.006 " to about  0.0013

I was gonna suggest "massaging" the spacer as a last resort. (Day late and a dollar short, eh?)
Glad you got it worked out, anyway!
