My 1977 has original aluminum wheels.  Just recently I have been experiencing a slow leak on one tire.  I pulled the tire ran a water test on the tire looking for a leak.  What I found was pin holes in the rim allowing the air to escape.  I have read about this problem and I think the fix is painting the interior of the rim with some product.

Has anyone heard about this problem and if so, what is the product used to seal the leaks?

Easiest product to install would be Fix A Flat. I have used it while off roading on rims that would make you say "NOWAY THAT'S GONNA SEAL"! It worked like a charm.

I had a set of Craiger aluminum wheels that did the same thing. Marked the leaking spot then dismounted the tire and took the rim to a welding shop where they put a spot weld on the inside of the rim. Never leaked again.

There is an epoxy type paint for this problem. I'm not sure if Eastwood makes/markets it, but I think they do.
The alum. rims for the mid-years(64-67) had similar porousity problems, and this epoxy paint was great for that.
If all else fails, put a tube in it!!

Sorry, Larry...I HATE fix-a-flat!!! It would have to be a DIRE emergency for me to use it. That's just me, tho. The stuff does work.

Joel, thanks for the response, do you know the name of the Eastwood product?  I looked at their web site and while the have pant for everything I could not find a product that was advertised to seal aluminum.

I agree with the fix-a-flat while it sealed up the leak it prevented a proper fix and I ended up buy a new tire.

I know most tire shops carry the stuff Joel is talkin about. Both Goodyear an a lil Dad & Sons shop carries this stuff here in my lil Burg of the world.

One of the guys at the small shop said it works almost too good. He absolutely hates ta remove a tire with this stuff on da rim cuz it gets stuck like a Pig in Mud on thar...

You can also use something called bead grease.  It looks like wheel bearing grease, but it will not hurt the tire like regular grease will.  Seals the beads right up and prevents future corrosion.

I am not having trouble with the bead sealing the problem is pin holes opening up in the wheel itself.

One possible solution would be to paint the inside of the rim.  Use a decent primer, and then a good paint.  It should seal it, and hopeful stop future leaks.  Rustolium may do the job.
