Good afternoon folks....

Just started to get the 78 ready for the warm season. I installed new chrome valve covers etc and was making sure that all of the vacuum hoses etc on and around the top of the engine including the intake manifold were all connected correctly. The underhood section is starting to shape up, however, I found a bright shiny cylindrical part with the following art (OEM Part Number 7030806) that is flange bolted onto the intake manifold on the passenger side of the engine with a capped off port. It is underneath the curved pcv tube that goes into the air cleaner assembly.....

Would sure like to know if the capped off port is supposed to be routed somewhere and also what is used for?????

As always, I certainly do appreciate to forum support program.....

That would be your EGR valve....it connects to a vacuum port.

Corvette440hp,

Thanks for the reply. After checking with some parts catalogs I finally found it. However, can you tell me where it is routed or ported to?

Thanks so much.

Mike, it would connect to a vacuum port on the intake manifold.

Corvette440hp,

Thanks for the info. Does it need to be connected? Or can it stay blocked off???? Perhaps if I knew what it did it may clear it up a tad for me. If it needs to be connected I should be looking for a line that is not hooked up on the intake manifold right, and particular place to start looking???

Maybe this will help. In 2nd pic taken from the other side it goes to the plastic purple thing on the front of the intake manifold just behind the smog pump. the other tube where it "Y's" goes over to the driver side fender somewhere.
I don't know what it does either.

EGR===Exhuast Gas Recirculator... basically, its a valve that ports exhaust back into the intake, supposed to help with emissions... by introducing hot air back into the intake to burn the gas completely... majority of egr's are disabled, or taken off completely and an egr block plate installed... usually a "no-no" with the emission police, but.. often overlooked with older cars.. :)

It's basically to re-circulate exhaust back into the intake for emission control. It works or opens with a vacuum opening the valve. With the top port plugged it will remain closed. That won't really hurt your engine. At idle or WOT, the valve is closed due to vacuum (lack of). If your car has to be tested, you would have to connect the EGR. I hope that some of this makes sense to you.

Hey Mike,
On my '79, I replaced the intake with an Edelbrock Performer non EGR intake manifold. It runs great without the EGR.
I may have to stand corrected on this, but I think a motor will run a bit cooler without having hot, recycled emissions passing thru it again.
