Vette(s): 1974 Black 454 Stingray coupe, turbo 400 tranny, barry grant 750 carb, hooker super competition headers, moves along!
hello, how can you tell if a 454 is original, the numbers on the block and the vin number match, but i'm still not sure. Are there any other ways of telling?? My car is black which wasn't available, and the paint code is silver which wasn't available either. It's a 74. Any info would be great.

You can also match the manufacture date of the block to help verify. Is there a reason why you don't believe it besides the color? Alot of cars were repainted and black is always a popular color.

14L, a friend of mine that is a mechanic for some reason thinks that the vin plate looks like it has different rivots than it should, i don't think it does, but i thought there would be a way to tell if it was original

The first thing I would do is take a look at the vin plate of another vette the same year and compare side by side.

There was a silver mist metallic available in 1974, code was 914.

Paint code 14 is correct for Silver Mist. You VIN fifth digit should be a letter Z for a 454/270 hp.

the fifth digit is z, but the fact is i am unsure if somebody changed the vin plate. I am wondering if there is any other way to tell. Thanks for any help you guys. This site is great.
