On my 1974 350  with a 400 turbo automatic, will the oil pan come off without removing the motor? I want to do a repaint of all componets and would like to remove it to clean and paint it.

I was able to change mine with the engine in the vette, but it is a 4-spd. Don't think that makes much diff.Wink

Should come out w/o any problem; just lower the idler arm first and that will give that extra inch or two. Suggest you go with a one piece felpro gasket when you button it back up. Good luck! Willis762008-02-02 15:42:36

The key, as noted above, is to drop the idler arm. That will allow you to slip the pan out.

Any difference with a TH350?
My motor has about 80k on it. Should I expect to find a build up of gunk on the inside of the oil pan?

My '74 had just under 80K when I pulled the pan off of it. Nothing unusual as far as build-up. Just the usual light metal sludge from 80K of running.

In addition to the idler arm I take the PS cylinder loose from the frame bracket. If you still run factory style exhaust with the crossover you'll need to remove that. Hardest part of the job. Flywheel cover needs to come off too. Pic shows how accessable everything is. On my 12K mile white 79 total disassembly was only about an hour with it up on a lift. The exhaust came apart nicely, I was lucky!
Easiest pan I ever removed.

If you changed your oil on a regular bases, your pan should be fairly clean. Mine had no build up at all.

Thanks for the info and the photo!
This spring I'll be having my front end rebuilt. With the initial talk of dropping the Idler Arm, that got me to thinking it would be a good time to get to the Oil Pan.
I'm not the original owner so I can't know for certain that the oil was changed on the regular.
It'll be one of those 'peace of mind' jobs gettin' it done.

Your 74 doesn't have an exhaust crossover, so just unbolt the idler arm and power steering cylinder off the frame, and let that sag a bit.  It doesn't matter if it auto or 4-speed.  The one piece gasket is a good suggestion.  Use a dab of sealant in each corner.
