The thing don't like shifting...any kind of shifting. Engine off is resistant, engine running...same story. All gears. No grinding...just hard to push into the gates. Fluid level is up. It's not synchros....been there done that. So, I'll make up a linkage lock tool at the shop tomorrow. Can this be done with the trans in the car?

I made mine out of a piece of conduit strap. It was the exact width I needed. If your car is like mine, it's best to take the exaust OUT. I had mine on a lift where I could sit on a creeper and work at it. Get someone with small hands and LOTS of patience. It would be best to have a set of hands on top/in the vehicle to hold the guage in the slot, and have the other set under the car to adjust the linkage. It's a tedious job, but may be your ticket to smooth shifting. After changing the shifter and adjusting mine, I am a firm believer that the RE-BUILT 4 speed has something wrong in the syncro area. 1st gear is always a pain on start-up, but the others are smooth after that. Go slow!

Didn't get to making the tool so thanks for the tip. That will save me some time. Guess I can enlist one of my kids to slip under there with me. More jackstands and bruised shoulder blades I guess.

Just to make sure you're clutch is properly disengaging, try this:
First thing is put the trans in neutral, with the engine running, and your foot off the clutch.
Then, full depress the clutch pedal and wait for about 5 seconds.
Then, try to put the trans into reverse.
If it grinds, then your clutch is not fully disengaging. If it goes into reverse easily, then your clutch is working properly, and you probably a problem with the first gear synchros.
