Just started pulling my 74 small block from the frame today. It is attached to a 4 speed muncie. Now the book says to split it at the bell housing which I did but it does not want to come away from the bell housing. It has moved off the dowels and there is about two inches between back of block and bell housing but it won't come any further. I would appreciate someone's advice as I'm heading back down to the shop in the morning to take another stab at it. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated. And yes, everything is disconnected, nothing hanging up just doesn't want to come away from the housing. |headscratch|

First make absolutely sure that nothing is in the way. Check the shifter, it could be hitting the floor. It has to come off the trans.
If nothing is truly in the way, the input shaft is hanging up in the clutch disc. This means two things. One, the input shaft is probably worn. It will need to be smoothed or replaced when the trans is out. The clutch disc is also worn, but you will be replacing this, so not problem. You will need to take a close look at the pilot bearing as well, but if you are off the dowels it is likely already cleared the pilot.
How do you get it out? Wiggle, shake, and pull. You may also try rotating the engine 1/3 to 2/3 turn. This may provide relief for a worn spot. If it's stuck badly you may need to pry. This can ruin the disc, but as said, you are replacing it anyway.

Keep in mind, if the trans in not straight it will bind and not come out with nothing else wrong. Watch the angle closely.

I highly recommend replaceing the pilot bushing with a roller pilot bearing when you do the repairs.

Thanks, Ken, had a feeling you'd be the one coming to the rescue. I finally separated the bell housing from the tranny and everything came apart ok, but your advice on replacement items will be taken under serious consideration. Much appreciated for your reply. The motor awaits me beckoning to be torn down so off I go. |thumb| |cheers|
