Hey everyone, I have a l79 in my 68 coupe and it desperately needs a rebuild or something. It just seems like its one thing after another with something messing up on it. I bought it from my father who did not give it any attention for 20+ years, so im in the deciding phase trying to figure out if I should rebuild, or do a complete swap. I have done neither and funds are limited but are there. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Are you looking to keep it original, original looking, same power, more power?
What is your budget?

These are just a couple questions you have to answer to steer your project into the direction right for you.

I'm not concerned about keeping it original and I'm looking for maybe a little more power but at least the same. My budget is around 4000. But would love to keep it lower.

Well if you do the removal and reinstall end of things you'll save your self a lot of loot. It's not really a daunting task as it may seem. With some tools a manual and asking questions here, it's doable.

I would look around for a local reputable shop that does strictly engine rebuilds. Tell 'em that your looking same or better power out of your engine and have them give you a price quote. Should be a lot cheaper than $4k.

Or you can shop around and price out a crate engine. Places like Summit Racing, Scoggin Dickey, Pace Performance, Jeg's even your local Chevy dealer sell crate engines.

In my part of North Texas you could get the 327 rebuilt with a slightly larger comp cam for about $3,500, and to install runs around 1,700.
I went from a 327 non original engine on my 68 and upgraded to a 427 which was the original engine. Engine plus intake,  Carb, new clutch  and some brackets cost me around $6,800. Plus 1,700 to install.
You might be able to swing the whole thing for $5,000 or so if you do some of the stuff yourself, or know the right mechanic.
