Need Alittle Help

Well today I bought the ZZ4 Intake Manifold for the Vette.  I'm sure it will fit, after talking to enough people I found out that this ZZ4 Intake is not designed for Vortex Heads. And, if it doesn't fit for some reason Corvette and High Performance will buy it back.

That line is part of the EFE system. Part of the system that warms up the motor faster. It goes to the vacuum actuator that opens and closes the exhaust pipe valve on the passenger side. The thermo switch in the thermostat housing opens that valve when the temp is at operating level. Without the switch and hoses the valve will stay closed and keep passing exhaust heat through the intake manifold passage under the carb. I guess you could remove the flapper in the exhaust pipe or wire it open. Does your new manifold have the crossover passage in the middle? If not, you may as well disconnect that whole system.  Mike

When I instaled an Edelbrock intake on my '78 L82 I removed the EFE and EGR system (the AIR pump was already gone when I bought the car). I replaced the thermostat housing with one without the vacuum switch. The car runs much better.

I see no difference in warm up time...maybe the EFE wasn't operating properly anyway?

Thanks Mike and Bruce  The thermostat housing on the new Intake doesnt have that little valve and it looks alot better.  I'm really not worried about warm up taking longer as I hardly ever drive the car in cold weather.  Beside I believe I had the flapper in the exhaust pipe welded open last summer because it was rattling very bad.

No no no  Glenn, its along way from modified.  I hope to get all this installed by the end of April.  The cold here is killing me.  Yeaterday we had a inch of snow, melted, hail pelts, melted, then another 1/2 of snow.  And I have no room what so ever to work in my garage either

Mark,  Very nice upgrade. Looks very authentic ( accept for the manifold ). The factory manifold looks ugly but makes nice torque. Let us know if you feel any difference.

Thanks Jim, so why doesn't the manifold look authentic?  The L82 that came in the 78 Corvette had a aluminum intake manifold

OOOPS !!!  Please forgive me Mark for speaking out of line. I'm obviously no authority, and it's not the 1st time I've been corrected. I have the L81 (said to be the same motor) and never realized that it was an aluminum Manifold (lot of smog plumbing covering it).I thought someone just painted it up (aluminum colored). Guess it's just mine that's ugly ( time for a little detailing).I'd have changed that out long ago to upgrade but my best friend(a garage owner, but a Ford man) advised me not to change the intake on the L82 unless you change it all (cam, heads and exaust). He says Chevy put a lot of engineering in to that motor and I wouldn't improve on it that way. I wanted to add roller tip rockers but they won't fit under the stock finned aluminum valve covers.The motor runs so great I should be content, but who doesn't feel an extra 100 horses would be better.I do a lot of educational reading on vettes but there is a lot of it that I must be remembering wrong, and a lot more that I haven't read yet.    Thanks for the education Mark, that was a real eye opener.    Jim B.
