Okay, I guess I'm dumber than dirt. My '72 is on four jack stands. The rear wheels are off. I just want to rotate the rotors to move the half shafts for cleaning and painting. The car is in neutral and the parking brake is off. Yet the rotors won't spin when I try to move them manually. What's up? I B confused.

With the suspension hanging in the rear, the halfshafts will bind up, making it difficult to turn them. You can jack up on the trailing arm(s) a little and then turn the shafts. 
Remember...the halfshafts are part of the suspension...they are the upper control arms, so to speak.
