In cold weather everything is fine. Now that it is warm, when I start it up, I go through a couple of minutes of choke or partial choke where it idles a little high, but OK, then it drops to around 400-500 until it warms up. Then it is around 600 and OK. Problem is that during that period of 400-500 idle, it is prone to die upon putting it into gear or taking off (auto tranny). Should I bump up the idle or is this an indication of some other adjustment?

Bump up the idle.
Automatic should idle at 800-900 in park, 500-600 in drive.

Agreeded. Then if you still have a problem you can turn the choke coil very slightly counterclockwise to hold the choke on a bit longer. You may need to set it back where it was when cold weather comes back. Do the idle first.
