Lots of little improvments add up in the end. The cost may end up high but it is like making smaller payments. Heads and a cam will be the next step for any real HP gains.
I rebuilt my motor and later changed the heads to 64cc Edelbrock RPMs. It increased my compression and made it posible to go to a bigger cam if I ever get to it. Runs to good now so "if it aint broke, don't fix it" is in play.

Yep - I have a 79 also. The biggest jump in power (at least in mid range and pulling hills - seat of the pants dyno) seemed to come from recurving the original distributor. Then I went with the GM ZZ4 manifold and Holley 7150 carb. Added a billet MSD distributor and true dual exhausts. Now it feels quick and capable. Finally it moves as well as it corners and stops.
 
These are great cars.  Mine was also a bit of a basket case and I am doing it on the "installment" program (I am paying for whatever I install).
 
Since I didn't learn from the experience with this car, I picked up another well used Corvette - a 1986 C4.  I'll have to discuss it in a different forum however.LOL
C3: 1979 Corvette Coupe, Auto, L-48, Red/Doeskin (my wife's fave);
C4s: 1986 C4 coupe (SCCA road race car), satin black, 4+3, Z51 package, L-98;  & 1993 C4 coupe, white, 6-speed, LT-1.

Hey Sfindlan,
It IS fun to have it running good!
However, it like a disease --- right???
Now that it goze faster, the sloppy old front end is begging for some much needed attention ( among other fixes that will have to be ignored for the time being).
Ahh well, I guess if we were ever done it might get old.
And you're right, "These are great cars."
 
P.S. Good luck with that other car that we can't talk about.LOL
