Just wanted to know if there is anyone out there running any other intake besides the edelbrock Performer that fits under the stock hood on a 72. From what I understand there are not many options to choose from. Just wondering if anything else works.

I have an Edlebrock Dual Air Gap in a 1975 wit a 383 and with a stock hood. I have a Quick Feul 750Q, a recessed lower airfilter plate around carb and a 2 1/5" air cleaner. I tried the 3" air filter and got a slight bit of interference. I have no hood insulation so that may help. One day I will try the 3" air filter again and get some silly putty on top of the circumference of the air cleaner to see esactly how much clearance I have at each location.

For whatever it's worth, I have a Cyclone Plus dual plane intake, a Holley Street Avenger 770-cfm carb, and a 3-inch air filter on my L-48, 350 in my '80. I also have no insulation on my hood and I have no interference.

Us guys with the later cars won't normally have the same hood interference issues as the earlier('68-'72) cars. The hoods on the later cars were a little taller in the center anyway. Especially the '73-'76 cars with the cowl induction hoods.
The earlier cars with the big block/LT1 hoods did have a little more clearance than the "normal" hoods, but not a lot.
One big problem with the earlier hoods, and taller air cleaners/intakes is the stud/wingut for the air cleaner poking a hole in the hood...

From what I know on mine I have about 1/2 inch from the wing nut to the hood..I think the Performer 2101 is the same hieght as the stock intake is..I checked it out when I got a new bolt and wing nut that had GM written on it.. don't tell Ethan that his play dough worked real good for this!! oh and if you use play dough to check it put a little flour on it so it doesn't stick to everything!

Gotta take into account that the engine is gonna torque up when you step on the gas, too. 1/2" might be just enough!

There are many available that will fit under the stock hood. Most websites, Edelbrock, Weiand, Trick Flow and others, give the A+B=Average height numbers for their manifolds. See the photo below I got from the Edelbrock website. The stock on my 79 L-82 was A= 3.75. B= 4.75 = average 4.25. According to the Edelbrock website the Performer 2701 is A= 3.74. B= 4.80 = Average 4.27 which means it is only .02 inches taller than the stock. Here are a couple other possibilities that will fit with a different air cleaner.
