I feel my steering is way too icy at highway speeds. There must be a way to build in more steering effort rather than get this feeling that simply breathing on ther wheel will make the car run off the road.

Take the P/S belt off...that'll do it!
You could try putting the tie rods in the outer(slow steer) positions on the spindles. You'll need to have it aligned afterward, but it will slow down the steering a bit.

Ya got to much power under the hood,back off on the throttle and get the wheels back down on the ground
