Vette(s): 1978 vette with an 80-82 stlye rear end molded in. BW six speed & an L82... for now. Lowered with VBP springs and bilsteins. Polished torq thrust wheels. New paint, audio system, aluminum radiator... Flowmaster and extreme flow exhaust components.
Drove my '78 today and heard a rhythmic tapping from the engine. I'm freakin' out! What could it be? Improper valve lash? Something crank or rod related!?!? I pulled of the valve covers and everything looks ok, pushrods did not seem to be bent. The noise seems to be louder from underneath the car but that could just be because the ground is reflecting the noise. Give me best and worst case scenarios. Also if anyone has a good link describing how to adjust valve lash that would be great. I don't know much about engine internals so go easy on me. AHHHHH! HELP! -Adam

If the noise is louder in the front and seem to be on the bottem check the pully on the crankshaft...it could be cracked and cause a valve type noise. It happened to me and when I put my hand down there I could feel the cracks. Drove me nuts as I adjusted the valves and checked everything else. How I determined it was the pully..when the engine was cold no noise..hot it made noise. The water pump put a drag on the pully and caused it to bend.
Good luck

Hi Adam
If it sounds louder on the bottom maybe it is just an exhaust leak?

Use a screw driver or wood dowel as a stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint the location better.
