Can anyone recomend the correct( or the best) head gasket to use on my 350.It will have vortec heads,mild cam,avg.compresion.

Hey Mikee,
I did a SPparts Vortec head change and they supplied the NAL-10105117 mentioned above, .028, GM gasket on a GM block & head.
Get the head clean and flat as you can, slowly place the head on the block, do not drop an edge and ding it.

I suggest that you use new head bolts and that you torque them in steps until you get the proper torque. For instance, if the torque is 100#, step one is to 70#, then step two is to torque them to 90#, step three is final value. It may take alittle longer, but you lessen the chance of warping the heads and you don't distort the gasket. You will get a better seal and have less chance of the bolts loosing up later. Hope this helps.

Fel-Pro Part#1094 is .015" thick.
In the February issue of Hot Rod Magazine, they were testing different heads,cam,intake/carb on a ZZ4 engine. They mentioned they replaced the GM head gasket which measured .051" thick with the Fel-Pro gasket I mentioned above.
I tried to look up the head gasket I have on my 350 HO crate engine which measure in at .017" thick. The GM part number is no good now. Now they only offer the one that is .028" thick.

No problem getting deck clean as possible,it's getting a few thousands cut when machine shop decks it and the vortec heads are new,Still haven't bought new ARP bolts,but will.

Not a good week! My son bought a 78 three weeks ago. On his way back to college on Sunday his alternator belt shredded and knocked the other belts off. He was on freeway and got off as quickly as possible but I don't think it was fast enough. It obviously overheated among everything else. After replacing the belts and antifreeze my worst fear happened lots of white smoke when starting the engine. Once driven for a few miles the smoke clears to normal. I also replaced thermostat as I could touch the radiator cap and it was cool to touch after driving for a few miles. It kept overheating and each time we would turn off and restart the smoke came back. So to make long story longer I took it to a local shop near his college that I hope is reputable and I'm waiting to hear from them. First question is if the block cracked in addition to the head gasket being blown should I have the block repaired or replaced? It is the original engine and tranny with 90k on it. Overall the car is mostly original but has headers and side pipes. Second question, and this is more for very future reference, how much does replacing the engine affect the value of the car. Thanks for any input.

At the worst, you'll prolly have a cracked head....it's really hard to do any real damage to the block, unless it's intentional. Be sure to have them check the valves, guides, & seats in the heads when they test them for cracks.
As far as a replacement engine effecting future value, it normally will, to some extent....just depends on who is looking to buy it. They may not care if it's 100% OE or not.
Also, it's better if you start a new thread with any questions regarding your car(s), rather than post in an old thread, even tho it is somewhat related to your issue. It keeps your question(and any subsequent responses) yours, and the old thread author's his/hers.

If it's a non Silver Anniversary or Pace Car, I wouldn't worry too much about original engine unless you are going to NCRS the car.
