I know this is gunna sound so stoopid(and I mean NO offense), but I gotta ask....are you using a timing light?
Can you reach down and grab the outer ring of the balancer and move it by hand(engine off, of course)?

Thanks all,
Pulled off the balancer and the outer ring had indeed separated from the inner ring.
Thanks to Auto zone-$49.00 for the harmonic balancer and loan of puller and install bolt!
Now I can find the timing mark.
Mike

Glad you got it figured out and there was no major damage.

If you would, can you please post a pic of the balancer in separated form so other member see what can exactly happens when a balancer separates.
