Today I picked up my '79 from the trans. shop with the 700R4 installed. I'm very happy with how it shifts, the lower 1st. gear and especially the lower RPMs at highway speeds.
The trans. came out of an '89 Chevy pickup truck. It was rebuilt with a mild shift kit. The tailshaft was such that my original crossmember was useable and left in place.
I've wanted to have this done for the last few years, so I'm psyched!!!
The correct speedo gear is not yet in but that'll get done in a few days.
The only (temporary) downside is my dual exhaust had to be tweaked in order to clear it's way around the new trans. It sounds like there is now an exhaust leak near the front and the right rear muffler is a bit out of place. I'm going to take it in to an exhaust guy I know this coming week and possibly will replace the whole true dual system as mine has been cut, welded and reconfigured in the past.
I got alot of good info. here from previous threads on the 700R4 before I had this job done. Thanks for everyone's info!

Well, now yes it does...
. It's not like I'm going to burn the tires off it but they do break loose when I floor it from a dead stop. The shift kit gives it a little chirp at the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points, too.

Fabulous Kevin. I'm just beginning the process myself. I looked long at the exhaust route ( new duals), but can't tell for certain what I'll have to do to accommodate things so I can make it the 30 mi. to the muffler shop. looks like a bridge I can't cross 'til I get there.

Hey Ace,
Depending on what's on your car now, you may just want to plan on re doing your exhaust so there's no issues when the 700 goes in. Maybe you could clamp something temporary together for the ride to the muffler shop.
My true duals had already been cut and re welded for other reasons in the past. So when it was tweaked for the new trans., it just didn't line up too well. I'll be having some new pipes bent & installed in the near future to close the deal.

Even with crappy exhaust and the wrong speedo gear I still enjoyed the ride to & from the shop today. The exhaust is annoying but it'll be done soon enough.

A good muffler shop can work wonders as long as your pipes are in good shape

When I changed mine over my muffler guy had to redo everything including putting the pipes through the crossmember so it would not rattle against it. It took him all day to measure everything and make the bends, but he did a great job
