I NEED HELP!!!  NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW IF THERE IS A GEAR INDICATOR FOR AN AUTOMATIC 72.  WE ARE RESTORING OUR 72 AUTOMATIC.  I KNOW THERE IS A CLEAR PLASTIC STRIP WITH P,R,N,3,2,1 TO THE LEFT OF THE GEAR SHIFTER. I THOUGHT IT HAD A RED LINE THAT INDICATED WHAT GEAR YOU ARE IN, BUT NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW FOR SURE FOR THAT YEAR.  I AM NEW AT WEB SITES AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIND OUT IF ANYONE ANSWERS THIS TOPIC.  CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS?  NY EMAIL IS FDKCPALSMO@AOL.COM.   MANY THANKS        FREDK

I have a 72 and there is no indicator that lights up. Doesn't mean much, for what it's worth....

I agree with Dave's info. The shifter should have a bulb under the lens, and it should light up each individual segment(prndsl) as it lines up with it. There would not be a "pointer" on the shift lever.

It may(or may not)only be lit when the lights are on. Adams' Apple38671.8798148148

HEY EVERYBODY, I APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSES!!!!!!  ITS WHAT I WAS AFRAID IT WOULD BE.  THE PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHT SHOWING  ON THE GEAR YOU ARE IN IS DAYLIGHT, YOU CAN'T SEE THE DAMN THING.  A RED INDICATOR BAR WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.  THANKS AGAIN.         FREDK

FREDK, the shifter itself should line up with the indicator, thereby showing you what gear you're in! The reason for the light, is to let you see what gear its in in the dark!
