If you're not going the NCRS route - I would just trim it up, shape it a bit and put it back on, doesn't need to be perfect and should still work fine.
 
I had one on and off so many times, trying to isolate a noise, that I finally put a notch in it so I could put it on and off without removing the starter. It's been on for years this way.
