Vette(s): 1976 Corvette, originally dark green, currently black with grey cloth interior. Very nice shape!
Ahhhh!

So i started up my 76 today (it had been about 2 weeks since i started her up...it's the middle of winter here and i try to start it every week or so) and i had the air cleaner cover off and the choke open. Tried turning....once, twice, gave it a little gas, then *FOOM* a nice big orange flame shot up out of the carb. Shut it down immediately. Nothing was burning or anything....but i'm quite certian that is NOT normal.

What the heck???

Thanks in advance.....

Vette(s): 1965-327 coupe, 1968-small block coupe, 1969-427, 1971-454 coupe and currently a 1976-ZZ4 coupe reborn again,and hotter than ever.. Add a 1996 CE LT-4 for backup
It could have been flooded? Timing could be off? If it had been sitting for a week or two and you pumped the gas with a open choke, air cleaner top  off? Once you had ignition the excess gas went up in what we call "FOOM"..Once things warm up it should be OK..

Vette(s): 1981 red with silver interior,350(L-81), 350TH, glass t-tops, aluminium rims, 1980 Black/ Black int., 350 GM crate engine/350TH, 1976 black/ saddle int., L-82 w/headers, holly carb, Hypertech ignition

Could possibly be timing or a sticky valve that hung open.  Thats always gets the heart pump'n when that happens

I pulled my aftermarket small air cleaner off yesterday and found the foam MELTED!  Sure glad it didn't continue.phewShe has been burning rich so I have an appointment Monday to have her fine tuned by someone that is much better at it than I am.
