will check filter, supposed to be new, I know fuel pump is new...did it myself....it was about 108 degrees outside, what are the chances of vapor lock?

Well now...vapor lock IS a possibility, but that usually causes the engine to die completely, since a vapor lock will actually "block" any liquid fuel from getting past the point of the vapor chamber...then again, that also depends on the fuel pressure at the time.
Has the car been running ok since then?
Another thing...perhaps your car is equipped with the little known about "Teen-ager De-fault" option...it limits the power from the engine if it determines the driver is being a bit abusive, or having entirely TOO much fun...

Another thing that causes this is a restricted cannister not allowing air into the tank. As fuel is used it creates a vacuum restricting fuel flow. Removing the gas cap allows air into the tank, and it runs fine again. Then you know to open the clog.

I had a similar problem with mine and found the choke tension spring was not adjusted right and the choke was getting "sucked shut"...... The guy who rebuilt your carb may have neglected to properly adjust it.
