Could be. Is it idled too high? That could make it do that. Also, a vaccuum leak, too hot a plug (heat range), any of these could cause this problem. Try twistin' the dist. back just a hair and see if that solves it. If nothin' else, just keep drivin', and don't turn it off!! 
Usually, if the timming is too fat, it makes it hard to start when it's hot ('kick back'). If it's too retarded, it don't run too well. I'd look for a vac. leak, and make sure the carb is fully closing @ idle.

The main causes
Throttle open too far. Either fast idle or vac leak
Engine too hot. Cooling system, EGR, t-stat, fan
Timing too far advanced.
Carbon deposits in the engine.
One of these will tie into or more likely be the direct cause.
