Not unheard of for assy line worker to load one or more of the stamp characters upside down. Assuming this was done on the line, it's possible it was caught immediately and corrected, or there may have been several more stamped like that before it was noticed. Typically, however, mistakes would have been ground out and re-stamped.

Need help. Im trying to decode my engine. Family lore states my grandfather was swindled by the dealer or mechanic shop shortly after owning the car. I know the engine was swapped. But that's all I know. The front of the engine stamps are 72584 V0630TKA C8S212089. The casting number on the back is 3970010.

TKA suffix identifies as a 1976 350, 4bbl, 165 hp, Chevy C10/1500. V= Flint assy plant, 0630= June 30th assy date. Lower numbers are the vehicle sequence/serial number. Upper numbers are NOT factory....perhaps it was a reman engine and those numbers were stamped on it then.

Wow. That is eye opening. So my vette isn't a vette! But the casting numbers really don't make any sense then. 3970010 on the back driverside.

That casting was used for years, and for several different engine configurations. It is a fairly common casting.
