Vette(s): 1969 COUPE CORTEZ SILVER, BRIGHT BLUE INTERIOR 383 cu. in. 512 HP. Hooker headers w/ side pipes PS PS AC AM FM STEREO. 68,000.MILES C5 5oth Anniversary Coupe , auto.350hp

As I was driving on the high way i noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. As i drove further it became a clacking sound that increased as engine speed increase. Being far from home and on the highway i pulled off at a rest stop and lifted the hood to listen. Sounds as if it is coming from the top end on the passenger side toward the rear of the engine. I could here it real well ther with the stethascope.Suspeting a failing lifter.Planning on taking the intake off and checking on Sat. Any other suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated.    Bob

Just pop the valve cover first, I've even seen broken rockers on higher mileage motors.

Here`s the poop.

No loose rocker nuts, no bent or broken rods.

lifters showed a little wear .

Maybe a collapsed lifter,don`t know.

Dug a little further because i didn` tlike the way the vavle stems looked when i peeked through the head ports. Pull the driver side head off , flipped it  over and S@@# .Valves went from soot black to bright pink. Not the way they`re supposed to look. Also saw some scoring in the #7 cylinder.

Made up my mind.  time to build a motor.I`ll try to post pictures as I go.Want you guys to see this head though.I`m goint to start

pricing the parts.I`ll tell you what I`m looking to do.

I want to build out a motor with alot of torque,375 -400 hp.I would like to keep the Q-jet as I just re-built and can save $$ there. REplace intake manifold,Cam,lifter, etc. Replace pistons.Headers with side pipes. I want to budget this around $4500-$5000 Including Machining.I`ll be taking the motor apart and putting it back together with a little help from my friends. so that will Save some $. For those of you that gave me advise on the Torque Thruster wheels thank you.But they will be on hold awhile. And I was looking forward to that Turkey Rod thing in Daytona.

Any opinions?

Jump in anytime now!

Thanks, Bob

Are you sure that ticking sound wasn't an exhaust manifold leak?

DEFINATELY NOT AN EXHAUST LEAK.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!

The pink can be from octane boosters.  Some boosters use a chemical called MMT for short.  It leaves pink deposits.

The other problems are another issue.  You may want to consider building a 383 stroker if you decide to go full tilt.

OH NO!! So, using an octane booster with MMT is not a good thing, huh??
