EGR is just an emissions gaget. It adds heat to the intake and robs your motor of performance so if you don't have to have it then get rid of it.

The EGR also stops pinging by lower combustion temp to below 2500 deg F. If the ping is not a problem, you don't need the EGR. It also produces NOX at that temp.
The hose is routed to a TVS (thermo vacuum switch) that prevents the EGR from working when the engine is cold, and it's a hinderance instead of a help.
You probably won't need it with headers. And if it pings, you can use higher octane or retard the timing a bit to stop it.

My '79 came to me with the EGR removed and a block off plate installed.
I was told by quite a few "car guys" that it'd be better left off because the car will run cooler and horsepower can then increase because of that.
I noticed that the cheap unleaded fuel caused a bit of pinging. I always run 91 Octane in it now and get no pinging that I'm aware of.
I purchased an Edelbrock Performer and went with the Non EGR.
