Distributor / tach drive on '72 small block
Forum: C3 Engines, Driveline and Handling

Now he tells me that I need a new distributor. How can that be??? Does any one have a suggestion or recommendation? How about a HEI Dist? I would like to keep the original ignition shielding.
This a '72 350 200 hp Auto all original with 70,000 miles.

I would have to say after all if its not your tach drive cable, it sounds like your tachometer gears are worn. I experienced something similar with mine until I sent it out for a rebuild. If your car runs you dont need a new distributor unless you want to upgrade to an HEI, which I did and cant believe the difference.

It's also possible that the cable is loose on the back of the tach itself, but disconnecting the other end moves it enough to make contact for a while. I'd be checking both ends of the tach cable, before going another route.

Is this thing actually eating the dist gears, or is that just what is being replaced?

The only other reason I could think of that would be chewing up the dist/tach gear repeatedly would be a lack of lubrication, if the cable is not bound up, and you said it seemed to spin freely...
