I recently bought a HEI tach drive distributor that was SUSPOSED to fit my '71. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& ;item=8021379822. Well, it doesn't because the cap is about 5-5 1/2" in dia. Not enough room. What did I get? Do later models use a larger diameter tach drive or what? I need a new dist. for an engine I'm getting soon. Help!

The HEI came out in '75, but they were electronic tachs. Is the cap hitting on the firewall, or the windshield wiper motor?

My 71 has the HEI tach drive distributor and the installer modified the original dual snorkel air cleaner by putting a "dish shaped dent" in the rear of it so it would clear the distributor.  The shielding is from a later model I think and was installed backwards. proracr38778.4873726852

Vette(s): 1974, 454 with 4 on the floor, matching numbers.
Longhorn, I don't know if this will help, but I installed in my 74/454 a Mallory MBI (Magnetic Breakerless Ignition) Dist #265-454MBI & a HyFire 6 Multi-strike capacitive Discharge Ign. Sys. #6852M. The reason I went with this model was it fit perfect, I was able to keep my Ign shield in place, and it really made a big difference in my cars performance.

I appreciate the feedback guys. I need to take another look at how it would fit. I don't have the money pit right now.I'm picking it up tomorrow in Ft. Worth. Had the new a/c unit installed. Maybe I can chase Joel down while I'm over there and see what he thinks.
