I believe one will carry the higher gear ratios and the other will carry the lower gear ratios. I don't know which is which and where the dividing line is, I'll try to find out and post here...

Found something. 4 series are made to carry the 4:11 and 4:33 gear sets, 3:73 and down use the series 3 carrier. Some gear manufacturers do make thicker gears or spacers so 4:11 or 4:33 gears will fit a 3 series carrier.

So my desire to put 3.90s in the car isn't possible with either carrier?? LukesVette38739.2769097222

Jack, there's a good chance you do, but you could also have the special thick gears or gear spacers, you would need to get inside to know for sure.

Luke, it looks like the 3:90 gear set will be okay with the series 3 carrier.

Whew!! Thanks big fish!!

Now I just have to find a reputable shop in NJ! I've had estimates anywhwere from $500 to $1200 including labor. Both reputable...confusing - I guess rthey should itemize parts and labor for me

well I happen to have the rear right in front of me. I dropped it yesterday. Wouldn't know what to look for to see if had special thick gears,or spacers. Was one heck of a job getting to the upper bolts on the rear, the rest of the removal was fairly easy. The build sheet only makes mention of positraction axle 4:11RA. At least Now I've got some knowledge of the 3 and 4 carrier lingo. Oh yeah, Adams' apple your right the difference is 1. Thanks again big fish.
